After over a week of decorating joe and I deserved a day off! The weather was to be dry but cold with a stiff wind. We were still to stay local but didn’t want to go back to Loadpot Hill area as Joe could access there by bike. So one of my last remaining Wainwrights just tucked behind Blencathra was a obvious choice with the possibility of continuing on up to Blencathra itself. Once we read wainwrights’ description we were hooked!
” Mungrisdale Common’s natural attractions are of a type that appeals only to sheep: There is little on these extensive slopes to provide even a passing interest for an ordinary walker and nothing at all to encourage a visit” and so he goes on!!
We had an enjoyable walk up it felt so good to be out! Once we got to the saddle between Scale Fell and Souther Fell we dropped down to a foot bridge and went up a path I had not been on before which led to the saddle between Blencathra and Bannerdale crags. It was all the time getting more icy and snowy. We skirted round the common and eventually located the top. The snow was firm enough to take our weight most of the time but the wind was bitter. I didn’t have my big gloves so my hands were freezing. we decided to head back down it had been a long week and we thought a nice meal and a long evening were a good idea!
