Corvara Day Three. Sass de Rocia

Another fairly relaxing day, we went to Arabba and stopped for a coffee and checked out the cable car for tomorrow. Then headed down the valley and up the other side to Ronc. We were just going up a short climb to the top of a small peak. It is the sight of many bolted routes not surprisingly as it was really a giant lump of rock with very straight sides.
After an initial false start we retraced our steps and easily found the cleft in the rock that marked the beginning of the gorge. We went up a ladder then staples and then more staples and a nice little path to a bothy. And up to a view point. Coming down we went down the other side of the gorge and found more staples but they were a bit dodgy so we went back up the gorge contoured round and under the bolted routes and down through the wood to the c road and the car. Lovely.

Corvara Day Two. Shopping lunch and a nice little scramble

Well we only brought Roger two pairs of under crackers……my fault…and forgot his walking T Shirts…probably my fault but think that is all we forgot. Started the day leisurely, lovely breakfast and a bit of a look round Corvara again. Coffee and then decided to head up to Passo Gardena. Lunch of apple strudel and cream and off we set up the via feratta Gran Cir, more a scramble than anything didn’t take the gear. But lovely to be out and the views were lovely. Came out on the top of Grosse Cirspitze 2592m. Back for a shower and out for a lovely tea.

Corvara Day One: getting there
Very early start Chris dropped us at at Edinburgh airport just before 4am. The whole journey went swimmingly. Sailed through in fact…ha ha well flew! Got a nice fiesta car with a USB socket. We took the scenic route and had a nice insulate for lunch at Forno de Zoldo. Great views of the mountains. The hotel is lovely we have a nice room with a balcony. After a shower we headed up to see what we could see. Corvara seemed bigger it is 11years since were last here. Had a great pizza for tea and a very early night. I slept 11hours and roger is on twelve and still going.

Out west…..got a new book!
Sgurr a’Gharaidh 732m. Glas Bheinn 728m
We had a couple of nights away in the van. I had a photo shoot with a couple from California at Eilean Donan Castle in the pouring rain! The next day we went up towards loch Carron to delive work to the patterns of light gallery. We thought we might head up Sgurr a’Gharaidh but typically this year the weather was not playing. As we got up to the start the rain was pretty persistent, we went at had a coffee at a lovely little cafe near the start of the Bealach na ba road. As luck would have it it started to brighten up and so we went for it. We followed a track round and up the valley very wet and boggy under foot but as we turned and followed a stream up to the col the ground got much steeper and drier. The top was not a place to be lost in the mist. So was just as well it was not misty! We saw a nest on the way down with broken eggs in. Luckily it stayed dry. After another night in the van with a lovely view we went home. A nice wee break.

Next Time Bring the Book!
After visiting a church in Grantown and then one near the river in Cromdale we went for a bit of a walk up the hills of Cromdale. The first error was forgetting the book but we just followed the map. We didn’t pick the easiest route! It was very heathery and humuky on the top. We decided to give the ridge walk a miss and cut back down to the car. As Roger said life is too short for round boring hills. A great view from the top though.
Wetter than expected on the Plateau
This was a day that turned out to be wetter than expected! We went up to Coire an t-Sneachda and up the goat track over the top and down to the shelter stone. The scramble was the best Gill scramble ever it was a shame that the top half was still covered in snow. We were going to go to the top of Ben Macdui but as it started raining and the clagg had settled we decided to head back. We had a little trouble location the path at the ridge but made it ok. We then went back down the goat track and took the path that traverses up to the fiacaill ridge and down the ski slopes to have a look at the new lift that will replace Sheila. And back to the car. Home and then back up to the car park to get the sticks and Rogers gloves! Ha ha

A walk and a Ride
We set of from home and rode as far as we could get up the Lairig Ghru, we then walked up past the watershed and down to the Pools of Dee and back again. It was great to ride back the past bit! nice single track….another 8 hour day.

It was a hard day after our visit to Glasgow hospital we were both a little wiped out, but ot was a great effort 81/2 Hours. We parked at the sugar bowl car park after dropping some more work off at the mountain shop at Cairngorm mountain. We walked over the Chalamain Gap and dropped down in to the Lairig Ghru then up to the Braeriach taking in Sron na Lairige on the way. It was a good day despite my low spirits.

Lunch and a lazy day……
After a lovely Lunch at Woodlands Tearoom in Stanton Bridge, where we made some jewellery sales! we headed back to Wassdale to capture the classic view for the jewellery! Once back in Kendal we had a great last meal at Pedros with the boys and Blair before we left for home the next day
